Living with diabetes requires careful attention to various aspects of your health, including your feet. High blood sugar levels can lead to nerve damage and poor circulation, increasing the risk of foot problems. Proper foot care is crucial to prevent serious complications. Taking care of your feet can improve your overall health and help you avoid infections and even amputations.

Understanding How To Care for Diabetic Feet

Foot care is crucial when you’re living with diabetes. When you are properly caring for your feet, you can improve your overall health and help manage some of the symptoms of diabetes. You should inspect your feet daily for any cuts, blisters, redness, swelling, or nail issues. Use a mirror to check the soles and between your toes or ask someone to help. Early detection of problems can prevent them from becoming severe.

Wash your feet daily with lukewarm water and mild soap. Avoid soaking your feet, as this can dry out your skin. After washing, dry your feet thoroughly, especially between the toes, to prevent fungal infections. After drying your feet, be sure to apply moisturizer to your feet to prevent dry, cracked skin. Avoid applying lotion between the toes, as excess moisture can lead to fungal growth.

Trim your toenails straight across and smooth the edges with an emery board. Avoid cutting nails too short to prevent ingrown toenails. If you have difficulty seeing or reaching your feet, talk to your podiatrist about having your nails cut in the office.

Always wear shoes or slippers, even indoors, to protect your feet from injuries. Avoid walking barefoot, especially outdoors, to prevent cuts and infections. One of the most important ways to take care of diabetic feet is by managing your blood sugar and taking care of your diabetes.
